I reached out to a few handyman and home repair businesses to see how much it would cost to make some repairs at my parent's home that I knew how to do myself, which was repairing the wood rot at the base of a door frame and brick molding. I was hoping that the cost would be relatively close... read more enough for materials and a reasonable amount for the labor. Life is extremely busy for me, because I take care of my own house and take care of my parents as well, so if I could hire someone at a reasonable price, I wanted to. I knew how long the job would take, around what the materials should cost with no markup, and assumed that a professional would be able to get it done more quickly. I ended up leaving Kevin a voicemail and sent him an email, and then proceeded to call a few other places. After getting several mixed responses back from the other businesses either not being able to do the work or the work costing hundreds more than I thought was reasonable for the labor and especially for the materials needed, which had obviously been marked up significantly, I had honestly given up on hiring someone and started searching for the materials to go ahead and do the work myself. Then Kevin replied. Without saying much, I could tell he was very understanding of my parent's and my situation, was also very understanding of my proposition and the reason I was reaching out, and even more respectful of my time, as he did most of the work without ever meeting me or my parents until the day of the job. I didn't have to dive into a long story of why I was reaching out since I knew how to do the work, but he still understood that I was looking for quality work at a fair cost. He visited my parents house and did an appraisal, asked me very specifically what I did and didn't want done, wasn't turned off by the fact that I was going to do some of the touch up work such as painting, mounting a new screen door, etc. myself, and then sent me a quote with materials at cost, i.e. no markup, and a very fair amount for labor, literally $50 to $100+ an hour cheaper than other place. His quote was also estimating materials on the slightly higher side from what I knew, but still completely reasonable, and when I asked, he explained that he likes to round up and be wrong than to round down and upset his customers at the end of a job. I'm not one to try and bottom out a business on cost, I understand that they're professionals who're trying to make a profit. But there's reasonable profit and then there's absurd profit. What's more, I like to pay people a reasonable amount so that I can expect a good job done. If you buy dollar store toilet paper, you can probably expect some tears. Kevin showed up to my parents house on time, started at noon, had to stop to go get the brick molding, updated me when he discovered there was no rot in the framing of the house, and was still done by 3:30 PM - 4 PM. I examined the work, and it was superb. After a touch up on the paint and a new screen door, you'll never be able to tell there was any rot whatsoever, and the PVC material he used will help prevent this damage from occurring again. I would recommend Kevin to anyone looking to get a job done around the house, and I will certainly be calling him again when I need something done. He does great work, is easy to work with, and knows what he is doing. You can expect the repairs to be top professional quality.
